Meat, in a bar: Not just for the boys?
Continuing with the meaty theme, another booth that caught our eye was that of Oklahoma-based Kratos Foods (QuarterShare LLC), makers of a new hunger-busting high protein beef bar.
While owner & CEO Richard Cranford - who does not have a background in the trade - says he learned pretty fast that "you need pretty deep pockets" to get into the food industry, he is convinced there is a market for his bars, which are "100% lean beef without the sugar and the gluten".
He added: "People want protein, but a lot of the protein bars you see out there are full of sugar and salt or protein powders, whereas we're selling real food. Each bar has 15 grams of protein, only 70-80 calories, 200mg of sodium, no MSG, no fillers, no preservatives and no trans fats."
So who is the target customer?
"We thought initially it would be male athletes," said Cranford, who named his brand after Kratos, the mythical Greek God of strength and power and has the strapline 'Unleash your Warrior'. "But a lot of Moms are looking for healthy protein sources for their kids without empty calories."
The 1.2oz bars come in four flavors: original; ginger & wasabi; acai berry; and zesty pepper.
