Feeding the world with peanuts
Finally, Peanut Institute chairman Sally Wells updated delegates on several peanut industry initiatives to tackle hunger at home and abroad.
One such is non-profit Peanut Proud, which helped deliver eight container loads of peanut butter to Haiti to support earthquake relief efforts in 2010; 83,000 jars of peanut butter to seven southeastern states of the US ravaged by storms in 2011; and tons of peanuts to Mother Administered Nutritive Aid (MANA) processing facilities where they are manufactured into the life-saving packets (containing peanut butter, powdered milk, micronutrients and sugar) for distribution around the world.
This year, with contributions from all segments of the industry, Peanut Proud teamed up with Kroger to manufacture Peanut Proud labeled peanut butter for distribution to food banks across America. Click here for more details.
The industry also works closely with Dr. Mark Manary, founder of the non-profit organization, Project Peanut Butter to deliver peanut-based Ready to Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) to acutely malnourished children. Click here for more details.
