UVO: A new take on sun protection
One of the most high-concept products at BevNET Live was UVO, a dietary supplement in a 12oz bottle ($4.99) developed by dermatologist Bobby Awadalla MD, which claims to offer 3-5 hours of protection from the sun's harmful UV rays if consumed 30 minutes prior to exposure.
Marketed in 'active lifestyle channels' (gyms, surf shops, sports outlets, pharmacies and online) as the "first liquid supplement that protects your skin from the inside out," UVO's active ingredients include CoQ10, lutein, lycopene, Beta Carotene, Green Tea Extract and Resveratrol (get the full list HERE and click HERE to see why each was selected), while the finished product has been tested* on 15 subjects, Dr Awadalla told FoodNavigator-USA.
*A UV emitting device was used to administer varying degrees of radiation to the skin of 15 subjects. They were tested initially without the supplement and again in a different area approximately 1 hour after consuming a 12oz bottle of UVO. The number and intensity of test fields that are red indicates the skins’ response to the UV exposure.
