Soylent unveils two new products: Cacao and Nectar

Soylent – which had a rocky few months at the end of 2016 marred by recalls of its powdered beverage and food bar and a public squabble with a supplier – is hoping to start 2017 in a more positive light with the launch of two new ready-to-drink products.

Soylent Nectar (a variation of the flagship Soylent 2.0 drink with added fruit flavors) and Soylent Cacao (with added cocoa) were launched this week on the soylent website and will be available on Amazon on January 10. They follow the successful launch of Coffiest – a coffee-infused version of Soylent 2.0 unveiled in August 2016.

Both have a macronutrient profile matching Soylent 2.0, and deliver 20% of consumers’ daily nutritional requirements, explained the Los Angeles-based firm, which says a reformulated version of its food bar – pulled from the market soon after launch after being linked to digestive issues in a small number of customers – could be back on the market as early as Q2, 2017.

The reformulated version of Soylent’s powder (v.1.7), which was also temporarily withdrawn from the market in the fall amid reports of digestive issues, started shipping again just before Christmas – minus whole algal flour, an ingredient its supplier (TerraVia) claims was unfairly blamed for Soylent’s 2016 recalls.

TerraVia move will have 'no impact' on business, says Soylent

After TerraVia hit back at Soylent by suspending supplies of its high oleic algal oil – a key ingredient in Soylent’s flagship 2.0 beverage and Coffiest – Soylent said it had replaced the ingredient with high oleic sunflower oil (also used in Nectar and Cacao).

Asked about the impact on taste, a spokeswoman told FoodNavigator-USA that there’s “no discernible difference in taste without algae,” although Soylent had previously said the algal oil was chosen as a replacement for sunflower oil owing to its “minimal taste” and lower environmental impact.

She would not comment on whether the negative PR generated by the recalls had impacted sales of its flagship 2.0 beverage or whether it felt its brand had been damaged, and insisted that TerraVia’s move to suspend supplies of all ingredients to Soylent would have “no impact” on the business.
